Unity Church of Charleston to Host the 14th Annual African Market and Festival
Local Church Aims to Reduce the High Number of Unschooled Children in Liberia
Charleston, SC – Unity Church of Charleston is pleased to announce the 14th Annual African Market and Festival on April 26th, 1PM to 4PM at Unity Church of Charleston 2535 Leeds Ave, Charleston, SC.
Admission is FREE. Proceeds will be used to support basic education and funding of a teacher development program in Summer 2020.
The event will feature African dance, music and food. ACE Liberia is a non-profit based in the United States and Liberia that focuses on creating a successful model for education. The goal is to meet the basic needs and normalize the lives of youth in Liberia, allowing them to overcome the impact of disaster and conflict. Proceeds from last year’s African Market and Festival funded ACE’s First Annual Teacher Development Program which provided professional training, along with food and transportation, to 98 teachers from 20 different schools throughout Liberia.
“We are proud of our results so far, but in a country where 62% of children are unschooled,
there are dozens of more schools, hundreds of teachers, and thousands of school-aged children
that could benefit from ACE programs,” says Sophie Williams, President of the board for ACE
The training program includes monthly continuing education for the teachers. Through this
program, ACE is positively impacting the lives of over 5,600 primary school children and has its
sights set on increasing that number by expanding the teacher development program
enrollment each year. This summer’s goal is to enroll 120 teachers.
